Waste removal on a construction project

Tell us exactly what needs to be removed

Refurbishments, office clearances and building projects can produce materials that need more planning than a standard mixed rubbish collection. Bloomsbury Waste Management can discuss specialist waste enquiries across Brighton, Hove and Sussex, including plasterboard, insulation and items that may contain persistent organic pollutants, known as POPs.

These are not interchangeable categories. Plasterboard should not be described as POPs waste simply because it is plasterboard, and insulation products vary. Give the team the material type, approximate quantity and any available product information so that acceptance, handling and the price can be checked before collection.

Upholstered seating and POPs

Some waste upholstered seating, including sofas and armchairs, may contain POPs. These items can need a specific treatment route rather than ordinary recycling. Mention upholstered seating separately when arranging a clearance, and avoid breaking it up or mixing loose foam with other rubbish. The team must agree the collection details first.

For the official explanation, see the Environment Agency guidance on waste upholstered domestic seating. This helps explain why a sofa collection can require different arrangements from a collection of wooden furniture or packaging.

Planning a plasterboard or insulation collection

Describe whether the material is clean and separate or mixed with other demolition waste. Tell us about attached timber, tiles, fixings or other contamination. Include an approximate volume and explain where it is stored. If you know the product name, age or source, include that information as well. Do not guess at the identity of an unknown material.

Keep materials accessible and tell the team about stairs, narrow access, site restrictions and the distance from the waste to the loading point. For regular refurbishment work, discuss the likely collection schedule so that separate waste streams can be planned before they build up.

A quote agreed around the actual waste

Specialist collections require individual assessment. Standard mixed-load prices do not automatically cover plasterboard, insulation or POPs-related handling. Bloomsbury will discuss whether the waste can be accepted and agree the scope and price before the job proceeds. Suspected asbestos, chemicals and medical waste are outside our standard collection services.

Call 01273 282888 with your postcode and a description, or begin a collection request and identify all specialist materials in the notes. For a business or construction project, mention any documentation requirements at the same time.

A little less waste. A lot more space.
